Surfwax started back in 2016; Uly and me were hanging out playing guitar, talking about guitar pedals we couldn’t afford and bands we grew up on. We went up to the bookstore, which is sadly the only place with a decent vinyl selection around town. We bumped into Seth, who we knew through a co-worker, started talking about Modest Mouse and Nirvana records which led to him asking us to jam. From there it all just kinda happened.
We put together shows for touring bands in our hometown (Jackson, MS) over the first couple of years, wrote and played as much as possible. We went out of state and played to strangers, made new friends, took a break, wrote a ton more songs and then did it all again this fall. It was great to get back out and play with some incredible bands. We were in Hot Springs, AR and Memphis, TN with our friends The Ellie Badge and the feedback on our new set was super positive, which is very validating.
This December we are filming a music video with J.B. Lawrence for Sonder. Dude’s the best around so we’re super stoked to have him in the directors chair. We wrote a pretty deep, maybe-even tragic storyline and we know he’s the guy to bring it to life. We’ll spend the rest of the winter cutting demos and preparing ourselves to tour everywhere we’ve been and all of the places we’ve been dying to get to in 2019
Our first “official” single Sonder (Feels So Great To Be Alone) dropped in late October. We’ve thrown demos out on Bandcamp over the years and been featured on some playlist but this is the first song we’ve put out in the world that we can’t take back, so-to-say. We’re proud of the recording but more-so proud of how the song came about. A few days after writing it we played it live at our comeback show. The emotion in the room was real. After our set everyone told us how hard the line “feels so great to be alone” hit them.
It’s easy to feel like being alone is the worst. We’re all supposed to “have someone” right? Well sometimes we don’t. Sometimes being okay with just having ourselves has to be good enough. Personally, I think realizing everyone around us has a life as vivid and sometimes as wasted and sometimes as lonely as our own is an important part to being happy with yourself in the most lonesome moments. That’s what Sonder means. Everyone will hear the words differently and relate it to their own life, but the line feels so great to be alone feels pretty damn good to scream no matter who you are or who’s around.
